Hi Dave, interesting that this might be HSS. I have been happy with this one so far--haven't needed to sharpen it much.

The Japanese chisels are certainly not cheap. However, you can tell how well-crafted some of them are when you pick them up.

Good luck with the tool hunting.

Hi Brian,
Fantastic site....said that before but cant find the post...?
I am in Taichung today but did pop along to the shops in Taipei in my hunt for japanese chisels and was frightened by the prices !!

I bought a set of 15mm + (cant get smaller) in the SYGMA brand as a fellow woodworker said they were HSS.

I'm still yet to return to Taipei and try them out, the ones I was used by the guy were also nicely hollowed onto on the back and he put it down to the cooling of the edge of the material in the making process.

Lookes like i'll have to get over to JC's again later in the week when he gets his delivery of chisels and has some dovetails in stock, he expects to get 3, 6, 9.

The Taiwanese brand that JC has in stock at the mo isnt the MIKI brand you have here, ill let you know more when I get some smaller bevels and dovetail.
